It’s truly the most wonderful time of the year on Martha’s Vineyard. Edgartown’s old whaling houses are decked out, the trees are trimmed in Ocean Park and Vineyard Haven’s stores have white tinkling lights ablaze. Our little island is going all-out for the holidays with festive events all month long. Join us for a uniquely New England December with our list of the top 10 events:
- See the Bright Lights: While there are festive holiday lights across the island, this year we recommend heading to the Crosslands Annual Christmas Displays in Oak Bluffs, featuring a larger than life display in Ocean Park with its very own FM radio station all month long.
- Give Thanks: It’s the holidays and what better time to show your appreciation for those around you? Join Islanders and visitors alike on Wednesday, December 6 for the Annual Ferry Captains Appreciation Potluck in honor of those who tirelessly ship us back and forth from Chappy – while always being “on time.”
- Have a Very Vineyard Christmas: It’s the most wonderful time of the year – it’s Christmas in Edgartown! Thursday, December 7 through Sunday, December 10 marks the 36th Annual Christmas in Edgartown weekend festival. Check out a jam-packed schedule of events all weekend including one of our favorites – the holiday stroll at Donaroma’s Nursery.
- Light Up the Lighthouse: Join the festivities in Edgartown on Friday, December 8 for a very special event: the lighting of the Edgartown Lighthouse. The Harbor View Hotel will provide the hot chocolate and music on the hotel porch as the countdown begins to light this unique holiday staple. Afterwards, enjoy live music from Joanne Cassidy to get you in the holiday spirit.
- Cheer on the Parade: Bundle up to watch the sights and sounds at the Annual Christmas in Edgartown Parade. Taking place on Saturday, December 9, it’s a festive New England event that may leave your hands a bit cold but your heart feeling warm.
- Escape to Cape Pogue: Leave the bustle of the big island behind and travel out to Chappaquiddick for a winter wonderland lighthouse tour. On Saturday, December 9 and Sunday, December 10 the Trustees of the Reservation will be ushering passengers all the way out to the Cape Pogue lighthouse to see it decked out for the holidays. Learn about life at the lighthouse while enjoying a warm beverage. Spaces are limited, so remember to register in advance.
- Experience Illumination: Head over to Chappy from 4 – 6 p.m. on Saturday, December 9 for a magical experience: see the Japanese gardens of Mytoi lit up for the holidays. Complimentary shuttles will usher guests from the Chappy side of the ferry and warm beverages and treats will be provided.
- Get Decorating: On Thursday, December 14 Morrice Florist will be hosting a holiday floral centerpiece class. Join the Morrice team as they walk guests step by step through making a beautiful floral arrangement. Bring your own cocktails or wine – or enjoy the non-alcoholic beverages and light snacks provided.
- Slow Down for the Holidays: Head to Offshore Ale on Saturday, December 16 for an Old Fashioned Christmas Celebration. The event, part of Oak Bluffs’ weekend-long holiday celebration, will include caroling, cookie decorating and ornament making.
- Ring in the New Year: Grab your dancing shoes and tickets to the Harbor View Hotel’s Annual New Year’s Eve Party. In its seventh year, the event features two bands, hors d'oeuvres and the best spot on the island to see fireworks display over Edgartown Harbor.
