10 things to do on Martha's Vineyard in October


 

 Autumn leaves and sea breezes. It’s fall on Martha’s Vineyard and it is spectacular. Now is the time to enjoy long walks on wooded trails that lead to the ocean’s edge. Come see for yourself and enjoy some of our favorite things to do this October.

  1.  October 1st – 8th - Manhattan Short Film Festival - Manhattan Short is the only event of its kind. The Final Nine screen simultaneously across the world during a one-month period, with the Best Film and Best Actor determined by ballots cast by the audience in each participating venue. http://mvfilmsociety.com
  2. October 1st – 11th from 10:00am – 5:00pm - Island Folk Pottery Sculpture Trail - Created by artists Bill O'Callaghan and Heather Goff, the 1/4 mile trail meanders through a magical landscape populated with whimsical sculptures. A great destination for anyone, young or old, who wants to suspend reality for a moment. http://islandfolkpottery.com
  3. Continuing in October – 2020 75th Martha’s Vineyard Derby – The Derby ends Saturday, October 17th. http://mvderby.com
  4. Friday, October 2nd from 10:00am – 11:00am - Fall Foliage Mytoi Meander - Discover the beauty of our Japanese-inspired garden through the eyes of an arborist and horticulturist on this guided tour of our beloved Japanese-inspired garden. Painted and snapping turtle sightings for the lucky. Advance ticket purchase required. Limited capacity. Meet at Mytoi Gatehouse. http://thetrustees.org
  5. Saturdays in October from 9:00am – 12:00pm - West Tisbury Farmers' Market - Outdoor farmers market features locally grown produce and meat and locally made products. The market is dedicated to bringing local agricultural products to the people both living on and visiting the Island. The market was started in 1974 by a group of Island growers. That first year they had about a dozen farmers selling their produce. http://wtfmarket.org
  6. Saturdays in October - Saturday Morning Hikes at 10:30am - In partnership with Sheriff's Meadow and Vineyard Conservation Society, BeWell-MV and Cape Cod Municipal Health. During the months of October and November adventure out on the trails and conservation lands to stretch your legs and watch the changes autumn brings to the Island. Dress in layers and wear appropriate shoes. Each participant will receive a copy of the Trails MV book and an orange knit cap for safety.
  7. Saturdays in October from 11:00am – 2:00pm - Pop-Up Library at the West Tisbury Library – Do you miss browsing books? The purpose of the pop-up library is to make library materials more accessible to families due to the library’s Covid-19 closing. Childre's and Young Adult materials, along with adult books and DVDS, will be available for contactless browsing. Librarians will be available on site to help browsers pick their next reads. Onsite check outs will be available for patrons to bring books home and enjoy. http://westtisburylibrary.org
  8. Sunday, October 4th and 11th from 10:00am – 2:00pm - Oak Bluffs Open Market - Enjoy Sundays in Oak Bluffs by the harbor shopping for Island-grown produce, arts, crafts, handmade jewelry and vintage finds. Social distancing and masks required.  
  9. October 8th – 12th – Enjoy the 20th Annual MV Film Festival - Rescheduled from March and will take place at the drive-in, located at the YMCA. http://tmvff.org
  10. Saturday, October 31st at 3:00pm - Book Talk: Ghosts of Martha's Vineyard - Local author and historian Thomas Dresser explores haunted happenings from all six Island towns, as well as tales of pirates, murder and the afterlife in a free reading of his 13th publication, Ghosts of Martha’s Vineyard.
