September may just be our very favorite month on the island. The crowds have dwindled, the water is warm and the events calendar remains full. From film festivals to moonlit kayaking tours, there is still so much to do on Martha’s Vineyard. Here, we’ve featured ten must-do events taking place this month:
- View a Film (or Three): Starting Tuesday, September 5, movie lovers can indulge in the Martha’s Vineyard International Film Festival with screenings taking place across the island all week. Catch films drawn from top-notch festivals like Sundance, Berlin, and Cannes but in an island-only setting.
- Take in a Lighthouse by Moonlight: Explore the Cape Pogue Lighthouse like you've never seen it before: under a full moon. Pre-register for this tour by the Trustees of the Reservations taking place Wednesday, September 6.
- Catch a Kite: See the sky alight with kites at the annual Martha’s Vineyard Wind Festival. Join in the fun or just take in the sights on Saturday, September 9 in Ocean Park.
- Fish for Fun (or Bragging Rights): The 72nd Annual Martha’s Vineyard Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby begins on September 12, so grab your pole and get fishing! Compete for bragging rights, tall tales or maybe even a brand new boat!
- Learn the History behind the Trees: Curious to know the story behind the Island's very own arboretum? Head to The Polly Hill Arboretum on Tuesday, September 12 at 2:00 p.m. to learn all about this unique property.
- Paddle at Sunset: Grab a paddle and enjoy an evening of sunset kayaking hosted by Island Spirit Kayak every Monday through Saturday. The night features a beach picnic just as the sun sets and then a moonlit paddle back to shore.
- Enjoy a Night at the Theater: Driving Miss Daisy is headed this way! The Martha's Vineyard Playhouse honors the 30th anniversary of Uhry’s beloved classic with a new production on the Patricia Neal Stage. Opening night is Thursday, September 14.
- Hit Circuit Ave on Foot: The crowds may be gone but that does't mean it's the end of the fun! A longstanding tradition, Tivoli Day is taking place in Oak Bluffs on Saturday, September 16. Walk along Circuit Avenue (closed to traffic this day) for live music, arts, crafts, great food and family fun.
- Live Like a Local: It's time to celebrate all things local! Head to the Agricultural Hall this Saturday and Sunday for the annual Living Local Harvest Festival hosted by the Martha's Vineyard Agricultural Society. Enjoy Workshops, live music, local food, kids-of-all ages activities and over 50 Island vendors.
- See Behind the Camera: See your favorite images from The Vineyard Gazette on display at Featherstone Center for the Arts. The exhibit, Vineyard Gazette Photography: Eyes of the Island, is a first-ever show that includes coverage of major news events, portraits of Islanders and fine art images taken on and around Martha’s Vineyard. The opening reception takes place on Sunday, September 24.
