Summer is in full swing on Martha’s Vineyard and the events calendar is filled with activities of all shapes and sizes. See a play (or three!), grab some great food or take a deep breath during beach yoga – it’s all happening this month. Narrowing the island’s events down to just 10 was quite a challenge, but at long last, we present our definitive list:
1. Get your Beach “Om” On: What better way to truly get in the island mindset than yoga on the beach? Head to the Edgartown Lighthouse Tuesdays and Thursdays at 8:00 a.m. through the end of August for an hour-long beachy Vinyasa flow class.
2. Roll into Summer: Some say summer doesn’t officially start until you’ve had a lobster roll from the Grace Church in Vineyard Haven. Grab yours Fridays between 4:00 – 7:00 p.m.
3. Join a Night at the Opera: Head to Featherstone Center for the Arts for the Vineyard’s performance of the opera Don Pasquale. Don’t know Italian? No problem. While the opera will be sung in Italian, the performance is interspersed with interviews from the characters in English. Join the opening night gala on Friday, July 28.
4. See Theatre Among the Trees: One of summer’s best traditions, it’s again time to enjoy outdoor Shakespeare at the Tisbury Amphitheater. The Martha’s Vineyard Playhouse will host performances of Julius Caesar Saturday, July 15 through Tuesday, July 25.
5. Nab a Negroni: Take a break from the afternoon hustle and enjoy a prohibition-era cocktail during Vintage Cocktail Hour. Head to the Terrace at the Charlotte Inn Thursdays between 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. for a Manhattan and complimentary hors d’oeuvres.
6. Catch a Flick: A little beached-out? The Martha’s Vineyard Film Festival’s Summer Series is in full swing. Check out their events page for first-class films all summer long.
7. Take it All In at the Cottager’s Tour: Head to Oak Bluffs on Thursday, July 20 for the 34th Annual Cottager’s Tour and get an inside look at some of the island’s most historical – and unique – cottages!
8. Indulge in the Season’s Fruit: It wouldn’t be summer without heading to the First Congregational Church of West Tisbury for at least one of their fruit-filled festivals. This month they’re celebrating the antioxidant powerhouse: the blueberry.
9. Celebrate the Sound: It’s the Vineyard Sound’s 25th anniversary and they’re celebrating in style. Head to the Trinity Park Tabernacle on Saturday, July 29 for reunion that is sure not to disappoint.
10. Grab a Book (or Ten): Need to stock up on some beach reads? If you haven’t yet checked out the Friends of West Tisbury Library Annual Book Sale you are in for a real treat. Stacks upon stacks of books of all shapes and sizes – with more than reasonable prices. Head to the West Tisbury School Friday, July 28 through Monday, July 31.
