Rainy MV

The Vineyard isn’t all about beaches and sunsets! There is so much to do on the island, even in the rain. Here are some of our favorite things to do on cloudy days.

  • Martha’s Vineyard and the Making of Jaws - Friday, July 14 at 5:30pm to 6:30pm - Before the release of Jaws changed the movie business forever, the making of it—in the spring and summer of 1974—changed the Vineyard forever. Director Steven Spielberg’s plan was insanely ambitious: Shoot the story of a resort town menaced by a rogue shark (almost) entirely “on location” on the streets, beaches, and waters of Martha’s Vineyard. Join MVM Research Librarian Bow Van Riper for a look back at the making of the greatest shark movie of them all.
  • Pony Rides at Misty Meadows - Saturdays from 10:00am to 12:00pm - $25 / 15-minute ride
  • Tap Dance Show: Music From The Sole - Saturday, July 15 at 7:00pm to 9:00pm - Music From The Sole is a tap dance and live music company that celebrates tap's Afro-diasporic roots, particularly its connections to Afro-Brazilian dance and music, and its lineage to forms like house dance and passinho (Brazilian funk).
  • The Grey Barn Public Farm Tour - Sunday, July 16 at 10:00am to 11:00am - Enjoy a 45-minute guided tour around the farm! See the behind-the-scenes and learn more about how we make our certified-organic cheese, raise cows, pigs and more! First-come, first-served, up to 24 guests. $12 per adult, $7 per child under 10.
  • Jim Thomas Spirituals Choir presents Impact of Music on Slavery - Sunday, July 16 at 5:00pm to 6:00pm - Musical presentation with lots of Q&A time to educate people about authentic slave songs and celebrate the courage and resilience of the human spirit.
  • Exhibit: The Extraordinary Life of Dorothy West - Tuesday - Sunday 10:00am to 5:00pm - Following her life from Boston to New York, Moscow, and Martha’s Vineyard, explore the story of Dorothy West, writer, editor, and youngest member of the Harlem Renaissance. Featuring never-before-seen photographs and objects, this exhibition offers a new look at the “best known unknown writer of her time” and the legacy she left behind.
  • Bowling at the The Barn in Oak Bluffs - Monday - Saturday 11:30- 11:00pm - Bowling is the perfect rainy day family activity! Enjoy a few rounds and then ease into the restaurant for some amazing food!
  • Pirates Puzzle Escape Room - Daily from 9:00am to 4:00pm - Play our fun and immersive escape room games and create new memories. Work with your team to solve a series of puzzles in our Jaws or Vineyard Pirate Mystery rooms. In our Jaws room, save the town of Amity from another Jaws attack. In our Vineyard Pirate Mystery room, chase Pirate Captain Drew Whitney around famed Martha's Vineyard landmarks and recover the famed Flying Horses Carousel brass ring that he stole.
  • Oak Bluffs Game Room - Open Daily from 9:00am – 12:00am - One of the perks of renting a vacation home on your Martha’s Vineyard getaway over a hotel is having extra space to enjoy and relax in. If the weather outside is uncooperative, make a day out of staying inside and have your own family game day at your vacation rental.
  • The Flying Horses Carousel - open daily at 10:00am - The oldest carousel in the country, the Flying Horses was originally built in 1876! Your little ones will enjoy the ride on the beautifully restored antique horses that are complete with real horsehair manes and tails. Grab the lucky brass ring to win a free ride.
