The Best of Spring 2023 on Martha's Vineyard!


  • Backyard Garden Planning Workshop at the Ag Hall - Monday, April 3, 2023 from 5:30pm 7:00pm - Anna Swanson, flower manager at Slip Away Farm and special projects manager at the Ag Society, will lead this workshop on backyard garden planning. She will discuss maintenance and harvest strategies for common crops and describe ways to optimize a small space based on sunlight and nutrient needs, crop rotation, etc. The class will then have a chance to plan their own garden plots! Whether you are a long-time gardener trying to think more strategically this season or a first-time grower unsure where to start, this workshop is for you! COST: FREE, registration required.   • Kids Trout Derby - Saturday, April 8 from 5:45am to 9:00am - The Martha's Vineyard Rod & Gun Club Kids Trout Derby will return at first light on Saturday, April 8 for its 46th year. The club purchases hundreds of trout and stocks Duarte's Pond in West Tisbury. The derby is free for kids 0-14 and includes hot dogs, donuts, coffee and hot chocolate, along with lots of prizes. No experience is necessary. Volunteers will be available to help neophytes. Coop says to dress warmly.
  • Farm Institute Egg Hunt - Saturday, April 8 at 9:45am - Join us for on the farm for an egg-ceptional egg hunt! There will be three separate egg hunts based on age: 2 and under, 3-5, and 6 and up for the more advanced egg hunt participants. Each age category features one golden egg with a special prize, will you be the one to find it? Come early to meet some of the farm’s newest spring arrivals. The under age 2 egg hunt begins at 9:45am, the 3-5 age group egg hunt begins at 10:15am, and the 6 and up age group egg hunt begins at 10:30 am. Please note you must sign up for the correct time slot for your child. Please bring your own basket. Pre-registration encouraged as this event historically sells out. This is a weather dependent program and will not run in inclement weather. You will be notified by 8am day of by e-mail if this program will not run.                                                                                                    
  • Spring Egg Hunt at the West Tisbury Library! - Saturday, April 8 at 10:30am - The West Tisbury Library will be hosting its annual spring egg hunt on Saturday, April 8th at 10:30 am sharp, rain or shine! Gather outside, on the side yard of the library by the Field Gallery. Bring your own basket for gathering. The egg hunt starts at 10:30 am sharp and is over in a couple of minutes so come early. After the hunt, please join us in the Children’s Room for our weekly family crafts. Fun for the whole family, and free and open to the public!
  • Easter at Harbor View Hotel - Sunday, April 9th from 11:00 AM - 2:30 PM - Spring blooms, ocean views, and sand beneath the toes set the stage for Easter on Martha’s Vineyard. Join us for Easter at Harbor View Hotel, which includes an Easter Sunday brunch bursting with a few holiday favorites, showcasing the best of the Vineyard’s seasonal bounty.   • Easter at the Flying Horses Carousel - Sunday, April 9 at 11:00am to 4:30pm - Spend Easter Sunday at America's oldest carousel. Ride the horses and catch the brass ring. The Easter Bunny will make a special visit from 12 to 2 p.m. 
  • VCS Earth Day Beach Clean-up - Saturday, April 22 at 10:00am to 2:00pm - Join us and clean up your favorite beach! Volunteers will be at more than 20 Island beaches with bags and gloves, or BYO! After the clean-up, the first Earth Day Festival, A Celebration of the Vineyard's Conservation Community, will be held at the Martha's Vineyard Museum. More than 15 Island organizations will be there with activities for all ages, educational presentations, food and drinks. Free admission to the museum and free lunch for everyone who helped with the beach clean-up. See you there! 
  • Bivalve Ball - Saturday, April 22 at 6:00pm to 10:00pm - Fundraiser for MV Shellfish Group. Join us on Earth Day for a waste-free event! Raw bar, chowder, refreshments, silent auction and raffle. Music from Johnny Hoy and the Bluefish. Tickets cost $50 each. Pre-purchase encouraged; event may sell out! 
  • Homemade Bagels with Vineyard Baker - Saturday, April 29 at 10:00am to 12:00pm - Join Teri Culetto, the Vineyard Baker, for this hands-on Saturday morning workshop to learn the art of bagel making. Each participant will take home a dozen bagels. Cost: member: $36; non-member: $45. 
  • Island Alpaca 19th Annual Shearing Day - Saturday, April 29 at 10:00am to 3:00pm - The annual Shearing Day Festival will take place on Saturday, April 29 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m, rain or shine. The community is invited to come celebrate along with the alpacas. You're invited to our special fun and educational event. Get up close to these gentle, curious creatures to learn about the fleece to fiber transition and the benefits of alpaca ownership.  The more than 35 alpaca at the farm will be sheared and available for public viewing.  Fun for all ages, and perfect for those thinking about investing in alpaca or for the new breeder!  Door prizes and refreshments.
  • Tacos, Tortillas, and Mocktail Margaritas - Thursday, May 4 from 5:30pm to 7:00pm - Celebrate Cinco de Mayo by learning tips and tricks to making the best (inauthentic) Mexican street fare that you can enjoy all year long! This class will feature a local menu with homemade tortillas, Farm Institute pork, and of course, a margarita mocktail to wash it all down with. Cost: member: $40; non-member: $50. 
  • Climate Action Fair - Sunday, May 7 from 12:00pm to 4;00pm - Last year the Vineyard celebrated the creation of its Climate Action Plan with a full week of climate action related events, drawing in over 1400 participants. This year we continue the momentum with a Climate Action Fair on Sunday, May 7 at the MV Agricultural Hall. There will be a range of activities, workshops, and much more for all ages.
