Martha's Vineyard in April 2024


Spring is here and the island is in bloom. Restaurants are opening up, live music is happening, and there is plenty to do to get ready for the sunshine. Here are our a few of our favorite ways to spend time this April on Martha’s Vineyard. 

  • State Road Restaurant - Burger Night is Back! April 2nd - Opening night!
  • Pruning and Pizza with the AG Society - Thursday, April 4th from 5–7 PM at a private residence - Volunteer to help us prune our orchard before spring! Dinner, training with Ian Jochems of Polly Hill Arboretum, and all tools provided. Pre-registration required.
  • Live Music: Back Porch Trio = Saturdays in April at 5:00pm to 7:00pm
  • Upcycling 101 Workshop at the Ag Society - Sunday, April 7th from 1–3 PM at the Ag Hall. Learn to turn old plastic bags, t-shirts, fabric scraps, and paper into something new with Anna Marie D’Addarie! This workshop will give you some new ideas and demonstrate how easy it is to create with what you already have! No supplies needed.
  • Annual Volunteer Beach Grass Planting - Saturday, April 13 at 9:00am to 12:00pm - This year’s Beach Grass planting day is scheduled for April 13th from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM, and the Wampanoag Tribe's Natural Resources Department will be offering volunteers refreshments and a meal on site, provided by Quitsa Cuisine. Volunteer hour certificates will be available upon request.
  • Horsemanship for Adults - Saturday, April 13 at 10:00am to 12:00pm - Join our equine manager Sam Cooperrider and our three Icelandic Horses for an introduction in beginner equine skills and horsemanship. Activities and interactions with our Icelandic horses will provide a base education and comfortability that attendees can take with them to their future equestrian adventures. These classes will include fundamental safety and handling, basic anatomy and equipment, beginner skills on horseback, and general equine care and husbandry.
  • Spring Forest Bathing - Saturday, April 13 at 10:00am to 11:00am - Forest Bathing, or Shinrin-Yoku, a Japanese practice of relaxation in nature, has been shown to improve immune response, mental performance, and creativity. Enjoy an easy, mindful walk-through beautiful Arboretum tree in a peaceful spring setting. This walk is led by Shanta Gabriel, who has worked in the field of alternative health for 40 years and has been leading groups in nature for more than a decade.
  • Chilmark Church Pizza Night - Tuesdays in April at 6:00pm to 7:30pm - Join us for free good food, warm company and fun games every Tuesday until end of May. Pizza, salads, beverages and desserts.
  • Trivia Night - Tuesdays in April at 7:00pm to 9:00pm - Hosted by Johnny Showtime. 
  • Spring Into Nature: April Vacation Program - Monday, April 15 at 10:00am to 2:00pm - A field trip a day! Your child can spend school vacation week exploring different island properties, learning about wildlife, growing food, making crafts, singing songs, listening to stories, and much more! Field trip schedule: Monday - The Farm Institute; Tuesday - Long Point Wildlife Refuge; Wednesday - Island Grown Initiative; Thursday - Native Earth Teaching Farm; Friday - Felix Neck Wildlife Sanctuary.
  • Flying Horses Carousel - Saturdays and Sundays in April - Ride the carousel and try to grab the brass ring at the Flying Horses, America's oldest carousel. 
  • Soil Health 101 Workshop - Sunday, April 21 at 1:00pm to 2:30pm - In this workshop, soil scientist Alli Fish will cover the basics of healthy soil and how to use amendments and other adjustments to respond to common soil issues. She will also share information on soil testing, including how to conduct testing, where to send tests, and how to interpret the results of soil tests.
  • Karaoke at the Ritz - Tuesdays in April at 9:00pm           
  • Arbor Day Celebration at Polly Hill Arboretum - Friday, April 26 at 1:00pm to 2:00pm - Join us for a celebration of trees at the Polly Hill Arboretum in honor of Arbor Day. We will start with a tour of some notable trees in our collection, followed by a tree planting demonstration.
  • Family Hike Fridays - Friday, April 26 at 3:00pm - Join our Childre's Librarian, Hannah, for family friendly hikes on Friday afternoons! All children must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Free and open to the public, no sign up required. Meet at hiking location, hikes will begin promptly at 3:15. On Friday, April 26 at 3 p.m., we will explore Short Cove Trail - Tiah’s Cove Road in West Tisbury. 
  • Earth Day Beach Clean-Up - Saturday, April 27 at 10:00am to 1:00pm - Join us for the 32nd Annual Earth Day Beach Clean-up! A community-wide event with hundreds of volunteers strategically organized at 28 (or more) beaches and shoreline locations.  Each year, this event results in thousands of pounds of trash being removed from our beaches. Pick your favorite beach and volunteers will be there with bags and gloves (or BYO!). Join us from 12-4 p.m. at the MV Museum for the after party where we will feed all volunteers coming from the beaches and celebrate Earth Day with all of the Island Conservation Orgs.   • Ag Society Spring Volunteer Day - Sunday, April 28 at 10:00am to 1:00pm - Help us clean up the grounds and barn for summer and enjoy a lunch fresh off the grill! This is a fun community cleanup and all ages are welcome. Please bring a rake if you have one!
