It’s March on Martha’s Vineyard. The official start to Spring is around the corner and things are starting to wake up on the island. Come enjoy Spring with local music, Art shows and more major events like the Martha’s Vineyard Film Festival. Here is our roundup of 10 island-only activities to participate in this month:
- Opera Night at La Soffitta - Sundays in March from 4:00 - 9:00 pm. Listen to the world's favorite arias and duets while enjoying the Vineyard's finest Italian cuisine. With Jenny Friedman, soprano; David Behnke, baritone; and Molly Sturges, keyboard.

- St. Patrick's Day Corned Beef & Pastrami Workshop at the Farm Institute - Saturday, March 7 at 10:00am to 11:30am. Curious what turns an ordinary brisket into corned beef? Or how pastrami is made? Join the Farm for a workshop that covers it all - from selecting the right meat cut, creating a spice blend, an overview on brining and the best cooking techniques. Participants will get hands-on and sit down to a casual lunch at the end of the class to revel in the fruits of their labor, i.e. a delicious corned beef lunch.
- Lip Sync Contest - Benefits Friends of Family Planning at the PA Club. Saturday, March 7 at 7:00pm to 10:00pm . $500 for first place, $250 for second and $100 for third.
- Second Sunday Jazz Concert - Sunday, March 8 at 3:30pm. The public is invited to a jazz performance featuring John Alaimo on piano, Eric Johnson on acoustic bass, and Tauras Biskis on drums.
- Gallery Show: The Numbers Speak for Themselves - Friday, March 6 at 12:00pm to 4:00pm. Do you have a favorite number or set of numbers? We have found over the years that many artists incorporate numbers into their art. With 20/20 vision and a clear path for the future, we thought it best to kick off the year with a show about numbers. We are inviting artists to submit artwork that includes at least one number in the actual composition, (not in title only). So from clocks to airplane tail numbers, scientific equations to computer code, number symbolism abounds.
- Ice Hockey Heroes - Saturday, March 14 at 5:30pm. 4th annual Police vs. Fire. Meet and greet our Island first responders and Touch-a-Truck at 4:30 p.m. All fundraising will benefit the Island First Responders.
- Music Street Concert: Musical Contrasts - Sunday, March 22 at 3:00pm. The library will host a concert featuring Music Street musicians. Including music by Schubert and Chopin featured in films, a world of “musical contrasts" characterizes this vivid March program. Ranging from Baroque solo gems to waltzes, tangos and Café Music, this performance will find the commonality and contrasts in the old and the new. This concert will feature pianist Diane Katzenberg Braun, cellist Eunghee Cho, and violinist Li-Mei Liang.
- Martha's Vineyard Film Festival - Thursday, March 26 - Sunday, March 29. Weekend filled with community, art, music, special guests, workshops, and fabulous films. Watch winning films from Sundance and Cannes and dive into conversations with filmmakers and film subjects that spark debate and action. Enjoy farm-to-table meals, live music, and free educational programs for kids. It's more than movies.
- Big Night Out at the Harborview Hotel - Saturday, March 28 at 7:00pm to 10:00pm. Dance the night away for a great cause at the Vineyard Montessori School's 25th annual Big Night Out, featuring The Vineshakers with singer Joanne Cassidy and incredible silent auction items. All are welcome to join in the fun to support the Vineyard's only Pre-K through Grade 8 independent school.
